Capstone Project: Savian – Strawberry Fields

Savian Johnson has attended Colvig Camps as a JACF camper for 5 years.  Savian is 15.05 years old and lives in Colorado Springs, CO.

Strawberry Fields is a project dedicated to helping to preserve a plot of open space that the Broadmoor Hotel has purchased and is wanting to develop.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To raise money and awareness to preserve Strawberry Fields as an undeveloped natural open space.
  2. Learn of the power of people as a group voice against wrong.
  3. Learn how to run social media fundraising page.

Skills Utilized:

Activism, leadership, compassion, time management, fundraising and love of nature.

Capstone Project: Skyler – Care and Share

 

Skyler Gilliam has attended as a JACF camper for 2 years. Skyler is 15 years old and lives in Colorado Springs, CO.

Skyler volunteered for Care and Share, a food bank in Colorado Springs, to distribute food and advocate for the organization among his friends.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Advocate for the Care and Share food bank to encourage others to volunteer their time.
  2. To serve the needs of the homeless in the Colorado Springs community.
  3. Learn more about how the organization works.

Skills Utilized:

Compassion, friendship, and time management.

Capstone Project: Evelyn – Cards For You

 

Evelyn Benitez has attended Colvig Camps as a JACF camper for 2 years. Evelyn is 15 years old and lives in Chicago, IL.

Evelyn’s project, Cards for You, gathered fellow Metro students and staff to hand make birthday cards and distributed them to the elderly so that they would feel loved and celebrated.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding that teenagers can be compassionate, thoughtful and giving.
  2. Persevering when a task became challenging and focus on the good that completing the task would bring.
  3. Overcoming my fear of public speaking.

Skills Utilized:

Capstone Project: Dylan – Bye Bye Birdie

 

Dylan Tripp has attended Cheley Camps as a JACF camper for 5 years.  Dylan is 15 years old and lives in Boulder, CO.

Dylan’s project saw him serve as Assistant Director for the Casey Middle School theater’s musical production. As a former actor with the group, Dylan wanted to give back to the program.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Foster the love of theater within the middle school actors.
  2. To build relationships with kids I do not know and having confidence to lead them.
  3. Proactively leading workshops and fixing problems before being asked.

Skills Utilized:

Self-confidence, perseverance, time management, planning, leadership, independent thinking, and friendship/people skills.

Capstone Project: Isabella – Inside the Child’s Mind

 

Isabella has attended Cheley Camps as a JACF camper for 3 years.  Isabella is 15 years old and lives in WaKeeney, KS.

Isabella coordinated multiple sensory friendly events at the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem. Isabella recruited 27 of her fellow classmates to assist her with the events. She also collected books to donate to the Diggs-Latham Elementary School where she volunteers.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To foster creativity with the kids.
  2. To teach math along with creativity and imagination.
  3. To develop my leadership skills while overcoming my shyness and nervousness.

Skills Utilized:

Leadership, organization, community, time management, planning and creativity.

Capstone Project: Bodhi – Classroom Artwork

 

Bodhi is 15 years old, lives in Boulder, CO and is a 6th summer camper at Cheley Colorado Camps.

Bodhi’s project involved coordinating multiple cultural art days at Superior Elementary school where he once attended.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Help the students understand themselves as an artist
  2. Further the students’ understanding of other people and culture.

Skills Utilized:

Creativity, leadership, organization, time management, flexibility and social interaction.
